The poisoned chalice of a blinkered, election-chasing Chancellor

DAILY MAIL, 23Apr09: Two days ago, the Mail invited Chancellor Alistair Darling to put petty party politics out of his mind and deliver a Budget for Britain.  We asked only that he should tell the truth about the scale of our troubles and sketch out a realistic strategy for restoring sanity to the public finances.  Some hope! Yesterday, he fled in headlong retreat from every reality except one – the fact that within 14 months, he and his fellow Labour MPs will have to face a General Election.
