Pupil banned from ‘perfect attendance’ disco after taking time off for father’s death

A pupil was barred from attending a school disco for children with perfect attendance records because he took time off when his father died of cancer.

DAILY TELEGRAPH, 15 Dec 2009: Sean Watson, five, had hoped to go to the end-of-term Christmas event with his sister Claire, seven, at Ryecroft Primary School, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Their mother Samantha Watson, 35, discovered they were not allowed to go because records showed they had missed several days when her husband Michael died from an aggressive form of throat cancer at the age of 46 after a two year illness.

Mrs Watson, from Bradford, contacted the school to check about the disco and says she was told by someone in the office that there was no exception for absence for bereavement.
