If it’s racism you want, head out of [London] town

An old article, but interesting never-the-less. Some great comments putting the author straight on a point or two!

THIS IS LONDON, 10 Jul 2008: This city was awarded the Olympics for its energy, diversity and irrepressible optimism – and there was a welcome reminder of that this week. New government statistics show that while racially or religiously aggravated offences rose dramatically around the country – up 77 per cent in South Yorkshire, 44 per cent in Thames Valley – in London there has been a fall of 19 per cent in such crimes.

The figures confirm my own impressions – that in the provinces, racism is getting worse, as is inter-ethnic animosity, and that as British culture gets more coarse and full of rage, bigotry is becoming acceptable. This past fortnight I have been in Hull, Sheffield, Bournemouth, Ipswich, Kent, Watford and Nottingham. In many of these places I found prejudiced attitudes you just don’t witness in London any more, even if they exist.
