I won't put a cap on immigration vows the Home Secretary

DAILY MAIL, 15Jul09:  Home Secretary Alan Johnson last night refused point blank to cap the number of immigrants coming to Britain.  And he said he does not ‘lie awake at night’ worrying about the population hitting 70million.  Official figures show at the current rate of increase the British population will hit the milestone within 20 years, with a further seven million immigrants placing a burden on public services.  Immigration Minister Phil Woolas has pledged that the Government will not allow the population to grow to that level. But last night he was apparently undermined by his boss.

British jobs for foreign workers: Experts reveal 70% of new jobs taken by migrants

DAILY MAIL, 01Jul09:  More than seven out of ten jobs created under the Labour Government have been taken by foreign-born workers, experts revealed last night.  The percentage of new jobs taken by those born overseas is the highest of any of the major economies analysed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.  The Conservatives said it was yet more evidence that the Government had failed to deliver ‘British jobs for British workers’.  The internationally-respected OECD said that in the first ten years of Labour rule, employment rose by around two million jobs.  But it said ‘almost 1.5million of this was accounted for by persons born abroad’ – 71 per cent of the total.

Immigration minister urged to withdraw 'smear' against statistics chief or resign

DAILY MAIL, 05Mar09:  Experts from Britain’s statistics watchdog hit back at immigration minister Phil Woolas yesterday as controversy mounted over his attack on the ‘sinister’ release of population figures.  Sir Michael Scholar warned they were being ‘pilloried’ for publishing objective information and insisted immigration statistics had been released as they were clearly ‘in the public interest’.  Mr Woolas was embroiled in a row with official statisticians after questioning their motives in publishing figures showing one in nine UK residents was born overseas.  He was last night urged to withdraw his ‘smear’ against the independent statistics body or resign.

Foreign workers double to 3.8m under Labour – and majority are from OUTSIDE the EU

DAILY MAIL, 18Feb09:  Foreign workers are taking a greater share of British jobs than ever, it emerged last night.  They now hold more than 3.8million jobs – 13 per cent of the total. In 1997, when Labour came to power, people born outside the UK held only two million jobs, 7.5 per cent of the workforce.  The figures are an acute embarrassment for Gordon Brown, who was under renewed attack last night over his promise to deliver ‘British jobs for British workers’. Tories said there ‘cannot be anyone left in Britain’ who believes the 2007 pledge.
